Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this program for?

This program is ideal for healthcare providers who want to know how to help their patients navigate sexual concerns due to gynecological and urological conditions, cancer, and sexual problems especially associated with pelvic and genital pain. Learning materials will include information about pharmacological interventions. In this program, you'll learn effective counseling techniques for patients and their partners.
Mental health providers are welcome to join us, and all coursework is AASECT, APA, NBCC, and CA BSN approved for CE credit and/or license renewal.

What is a sexuality counselor?

Sexuality counselors assist the patient to realistically resolve concerns through the introduction of problem solving techniques of communication as well as providing accurate information and relevant suggestions of specific exercises and techniques in sexual expression. Sexuality counseling is generally short term and client centered, focusing on the immediate concern or problem. Sexuality counseling can be individual or couple counseling. Sexuality counselors are trained to identify situations that require intensive therapy and to make appropriate referrals to a licensed sex therapist when needed.

Can I call myself a certified sex counselor or sex therapist after I finish this program?

A certificate and certification are different. At the end of this program you will receive a certificate of completion. You can call yourself an accredited sexual health provider, but you cannot use the Certified Sexuality Counselor credential as that is the AASECT certification. AASECT certification entails quite a bit more coursework, supervised clinical hours, and a unique 14-hour experiential workshop called a Sexual Attitude Reassessment (SAR). If you are interested in AASECT certification, then this course may still be the right option for you! If you are interested in AASECT certification, there will be an option to continue your studies and meet the AASECT educational requirements after completion of the SHEA Program if you so desire. See the next question for more details!

What is AASECT? And, what is needed for AASECT certification?

AASECT is the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists. AASECT certification requirements include that you are licensed, take a workshop called a SAR (Sexual Attitude Reassessment), have 300 hours of clinical work over a minimum of 18 months, and 50 hours of supervision for sex therapists. Sexuality counselors have similar requirements but less hours of clinical work and supervision. To assist you in better understanding AASECT certification, we have recorded a FREE webinar about AASECT certification, which can be viewed by clicking here. Please go to the AASECT site for details or contact us for more information.

Advanced Techniques in Sexuality Counseling for Female Sexual Dysfunction

Gain a comprehensive understanding of cisgender female sexual anatomy and its role in sexual pleasure and function. Identify factors contributing to sexual disorders, including anorgasmia, female sexual interest/arousal disorder, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, delayed ejaculation, and male hyposexuality. Develop an evidence-based treatment plan to optimize sexual function and pleasure. Explore the complex factors contributing to sexual and pelvic pain disorders (GPPPD). Learn how to educate individuals with GPPPD about the nature of sexual pain and its management. Recognize the impact on partners and the importance of including them in treatment.

Mastering Sexuality Counseling for Male Sexual Dysfunction

Gain a thorough understanding of cisgender male sexual anatomy and its role in sexual pleasure and function. Identify factors contributing to male sexual disorders, including erectile disorder, premature ejaculation, delayed ejaculation, and male hypoactive sexual desire. Develop an evidence-based treatment plan to optimize sexual function and pleasure. Determine when and how to make ethical referrals to appropriate medical and mental health providers.

Assessing Sexual Issues in a Diverse Client Population

Assessing a client or patient’s (C/P) sexual issues requires knowledge of how to conduct an initial interview and determine the level of counseling the C/P may need to optimize sexual function and pleasure. A practical brief sexual history model is presented in *Fundamentals of Assessment, Pt. 1 and Pt. 2*, alongside a more in-depth sexological ecosystemic approach to identify specific contributing factors. Ensuring an atmosphere of safety for discussing sexual issues is covered in *Trauma-Informed Care and Sexuality Counseling*.

Core Principles of Effective Sexuality Counseling

Gain an understanding of the solution-focused approach to counseling as a brief method for resolving sexual complaints and learn to formulate a solution-focused treatment plan for either an individual or a couple. Understand when and how sensate focus can be used in the treatment of various sexual issues, such as arousal problems, orgasm difficulties, erectile dysfunction, and premature ejaculation. Observe a role-play between a nurse practitioner and a surrogate client to reinforce the importance of rapport and brief counseling approaches, as well as how to refer to a sex therapist—a psychotherapist trained in treating sexual disorders. Discover which sexual aids and lubricants might be recommended to clients or patients based on their complaints.

Specialized Approaches in Sexuality Counseling with Specific Populations

Understand the necessity and importance of practicing culturally sensitive sexual medicine. Create a welcoming practice for a diverse population, acknowledging that sexual attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs vary across cultures. Honor the client or patient’s (C/P’s) autonomy and build knowledge and skills so that the C/P can make informed decisions. Employ culturally sensitive intake practices, such as being affirming, nonjudgmental, and aware of one’s own cultural biases.

Working with parents of LGBTQ+ minors require sensitivity and the ability to listen to and respect their concerns about their child’s sexual orientation and identity. Explain to family members the risks faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, such as depression and substance abuse, and the importance of familial support and acceptance as a mitigating factor. Help parents identify affirming school and community resources and organizations.

Comprehensive Sexuality Counseling for Cancer Survivors

Identify the profound mental, psychological, physical, and relational impacts of cancer, including breast and prostate cancer. Use a collaborative, inclusive, ecosystemic approach to gather information and create a specific treatment plan for cancer survivors and their partners to heal from the sexual and relational late effects of a cancer diagnosis. Employ Medical Family Therapy (MedFT) to understand systemic changes in a couple’s relationship resulting from a cancer diagnosis. Apply evidence-based interventions to diminish or resolve sex and relationship problems related to the cancer diagnosis.

Sexuality and Reproduction: Integrating Care and Counseling

Understand the intersection of biological, psychological, and sexual factors in individuals and couples facing infertility. Describe the biological causes and medical treatments of infertility and their impacts on physical, psychological, relational, and sexual well-being. Explain the circular relationship between infertility and sexual issues, where infertility can contribute to sexual problems and vice versa. Construct a treatment plan to address the emotional, sexual, and relational effects of infertility and its treatment.

Recognize the changes in sexual health that may occur at each stage of pregnancy and how these changes may affect the pregnant person and their partner. Develop a treatment plan to address these changes and improve sexual and relationship health. Identify the factors that contribute to postpartum depression and anxiety in either partner. Describe how postpartum depression, anxiety, and hormonal changes may cause sexual late effects in either partner. Understand the changes in identity and relationship roles that may occur in postpartum individuals and couples. Generate a treatment plan to address the mental health issues, as well as the relationship and sexual late effects, experienced by postpartum individuals and couples.
